Series: On Earth as it is in Heaven
Blessed Are the Unimportant
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
Main idea
Our world is constantly asking, “Who matters?” We reward the loud, the noticed, the powerful, and the “important.” But in the Beatitudes, Jesus announces a completely different kingdom one where the overlooked are seen, where meekness is not weakness, and where strength comes under the government of love.
Scripture
Matthew 5: 1-5
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Mark 10:37
37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
Matthew 11:29
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Psalms 37: 9-11
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy peace and prosperity.
Revelation 21: 1-4
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Discussion Questions
Scripture for the group to read: Matthew 5:1–5 (focus v.5) (optional cross-reference: Psalm 37:9–11)
LOOK BACK (Connection)
- What is one high and one low from your week?
- Did you follow through on a step of obedience from last time? How did it go?
- Who did you share (or pray) with this week? What happened?
LOOK UP (Discover the Word)
- Read Matthew 5:1–5 aloud (twice if possible). What stood out to you?
- In your own words, what is happening in this passage? (Summarize simply.)
- What do we learn about Jesus/God here—what He values and what His kingdom is like?
- What do we learn about people/us (our hearts, desires for importance, responses)?
- What do you think “meek/gentle” means in this context? What does it NOT mean?
- What does “inherit the earth/land” mean based on this passage (and Psalm 37:9–11 if you read it)?
LOOK FORWARD (Obey & Share)
- What is one specific way you can practice meekness this week (tone, apology, giving credit, serving quietly, online comments, home/work)?
- What might get in the way—and what will you do when that moment comes?
- Who is one person you can encourage or share this with this week? How will you bring it up?
Moving Forward
This week, look for the “far table” moments when you’re tempted to fight for recognition, control, or the last word and choose the way of Jesus instead. Practice meekness as strength guided by love: apologize first, give credit away, serve quietly, and trust God with the outcome. The kingdom grows in us when “mine” becomes “ours.”
