Series: On Earth as it is in Heaven
Blessed Are the Hungry
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
Main Idea
Jesus says the truly blessed life isn’t found in pretending you’re fine or performing spiritually it’s found in a deep craving for what is right, true, and aligned with God.
Scripture
Matthew 5:1-6
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Matthew 6:33
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 23:23
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Isaiah 55:2
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Psalm 42:1-2
1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
Revelation 21:4
4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Discussion Questions
1) ICEBREAKER (Connect)
- What was a “2% battery” moment you had this week, and what did you immediately do when you felt drained?
2) READ (Observe)
Read Matthew 5:6 together (and if you want context, also read Matthew 5:3–6).
3) RETELL (Comprehension)
In your own words, what is this verse saying? Retell it without looking.
4) OBSERVATIONS (What does it say?)
- What words or images stand out (hunger, thirst, righteousness, filled)?
- What do you think “hunger and thirst” communicates about intensity and priority?
- What do you think “righteousness” includes (inside the heart and outside in relationships/justice)?
5) MEANING (What does it mean?)
- Why do you think Jesus calls the hungry “blessed” instead of the “already righteous”?
- What does the promise “they will be filled” tell us about God’s role in change and satisfaction?
6) APPLICATION (Obey)
- Where is your soul at “2%” right now (stress, loneliness, anger, temptation, disappointment)?
- What is one “false charger” you tend to reach for when you hit 2%?
- What is one specific step of obedience you will take this week to aim your hunger toward God’s righteousness? (Make it clear and doable.)
7) ACCOUNTABILITY (Share)
Who will you tell this week about your step, so they can encourage and check in with you?
8) PRAYER (Pray)
Moving Forward
This week, pay attention to your “2% moments.” Name what you reach for, and bring it into the light with God. Ask Jesus for a new appetite, and take one simple step of obedience not to earn love, but to stay near the table where he truly satisfies.
