Main Idea

What do we usually do when something breaks? Most of the time, we try to hide the damage, avoid the mess, or throw the broken thing away. But the gospel gives us a different picture. God does not ignore what is fractured. He moves toward it with mercy, truth, and healing. Blessed are the peacemakers.

Scripture

Matthew 5:3–10

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:18
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

Matthew 5:43–48
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever repaired something valuable that was broken instead of throwing it away? What made it worth saving? What stood out to you most from the difference between peacekeeping and peacemaking?
  • Why do you think it is easier to keep the surface calm than to pursue real healing?
  • Read 2 Corinthians 5:18. Why is it important to remember that peace starts with God reconciling us to Himself through Christ before it becomes something we offer to others?
  • Read Matthew 5:43–48. Why do you think Jesus connects peacemaking with loving enemies, praying for them, and even greeting people we would rather avoid?
  • Is there a relationship in your life where you may have settled for distance instead of peace?
  • What is one small, practical step you can take this week to move toward reconciliation?

Moving Forward

Do not settle for peacekeeping when Jesus calls you to peacemaking. This week, ask yourself: “Am I avoiding what is broken, or am I letting the gospel shape the way I respond?” Pray first, humble yourself first, and take one small step toward healing. God has not only given you peace in Christ, He has also given you the ministry of reconciliation.
