Main Idea

What if one of the clearest signs that you belong to Jesus is not always applause, comfort, or approval but opposition? What if faithfulness to Christ sometimes costs you something? This beatitude reminds us that the blessed life is not found in being accepted by the world, but in belonging to the kingdom of heaven.

Scripture

Matthew 5:10–12
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

John 15:20
20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

2 Timothy 3:12
12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

Acts 5:41
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

Acts 16:25
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Daniel 3:16–18
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[a] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever had a moment when doing the right thing made life harder instead of easier? What happened?
  • Read Matthew 5:10–12. Why do you think Jesus calls persecution for righteousness “blessed”?
  • What are some everyday ways Christians may experience persecution or pressure in work, school, friendships, or family?
  • Why is it so hard to lose people’s approval? How does keeping our eyes on Christ help us stand firm when obedience costs us something?
  • What is one area of your life where you may need courage to follow Jesus more openly or more faithfully? How can this group support you?

Moving Forward

When following Jesus costs you something, do not confuse opposition with failure. Stand firm, keep your eyes on Christ, and remember that the approval of the Father matters more than the applause of people. This week, ask yourself: “Am I choosing comfort, or am I choosing faithfulness?”
