Series: On Earth as it is in Heaven
Blessed Are the Hurting
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
Main Idea
What if the thing you’ve been trying to avoid; the ache, the tears, the grief…is the very place Jesus calls “blessed”? Our world treats mourning and grief like a problem to fix or a weakness to hide. But Jesus interrupts our grief-avoidance habits with a surprising announcement: “Blessed are those who mourn.”
Scripture
Matthew 5: 1-4
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Psalms 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
John 14:16
16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever—
Revelation 21: 3-4
3 and then I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “See! The tabernacle of God is among men, and He will live among them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them [a][as their God,] 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be death; there will no longer be sorrow and anguish, or crying, or pain; for the [b]former order of things has passed away.”
Discussion Questions
- Read: Read Matthew 5:1–4 and Psalms 34:8 out loud (twice if possible, in two different translations).
- Retell: In your own words, what does this passage say? (As a group, retell it without looking.)
- Observe: What stands out to you about the people Jesus calls “blessed”? What words or phrases feel surprising?
- About God: What do we learn about God/Jesus from this passage?
- About People: What do we learn about people (our need, grief, weakness, reality) from this passage?
- Obey: If this is true—“blessed are those who mourn”—what is one specific step you will take this week? (Example: name a loss, practice lament, invite the Comforter, talk to someone instead of numbing.)
- I will: Complete this sentence: “This week, I will _________.” (Make it specific and measurable.)
- Share: Who is one person you can share this truth with or encourage this week? How will you do it?
Moving Forward
This week, don’t rush past your grief. Name the loss, bring it to Jesus in prayer (lament), invite the Holy Spirit…the Comforter into it, and let someone in your group carry it with you. Choose one specific area of pain to share, and let the group pray comfort over you.
