From the series:  What If It's True

Would You Walk Away?

Sunday, March 30, 2025 by Drew Ruiz – Mark 10:17-27

About the Series

What if Jesus isn’t just a good teacher or a historical figure but the King who came to change everything? What if His words, miracles, death, and even resurrection are more than just stories?

For the next eight weeks, we’re walking through the Gospel of Mark, wrestling with the biggest question of all: What if it’s true? Because if it is, it’s not just another belief system it’s a reality that flips everything upside down.

No easy answers. No religious clichés. Just real talk about the story that refuses to be ignored.

The Main Idea

What if the question “How do I get into Heaven?” isn’t answered the way most people think? Many assume eternal life is a reward for being a good person. But what if goodness isn’t good enough?

Most of us spend our lives climbing a ladder—doing good, checking boxes, following rules—only to discover the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. This message confronts the deception of “good enough” and reveals the truth about salvation through the eyes of Jesus in His encounter with the rich young ruler.

Scriptures

Mark 10:17-27

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[a]

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[b] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Questions for Discussion

  1. Icebreaker: If someone on the street asked you, “How do you get into Heaven?”—what do you think most people would say? What would you have said in your teenage years?

  2. Have you ever found yourself comparing your morality or lifestyle to others as a way to feel “good enough”? What did that produce in you—pride or discouragement?

  3. Read Mark 10:17–27. What does Jesus reveal about the dangers of trusting in our achievements, wealth, or moral behavior for salvation?

  4. What is something in your life—status, career, relationships, finances—that would be hard to surrender if Jesus asked you to give it up? How can your group help you trust Jesus more deeply in that area?

  5. Jesus looked at the rich young ruler and loved him. How does knowing Jesus loves us even when confronting our idols affect the way we respond to His call to “Follow Me”?

Moving Forward

Ask yourself this week: What am I trusting to save me, besides Jesus? What’s the one thing that, if Jesus asked you to let go, would make you walk away sad? Real freedom comes when we surrender that one thing and follow the One who gave up everything for us.

No mates. No hurtes. No digas falso testimonio. No defraudes. Honra a tu padre y a tu madre.
