Main Idea

Most people come to God for something help, healing, direction but King David shows us another way. In the middle of threats and fear, he doesn’t ask for stuff. He asks for one thing: to dwell, to gaze, and to seek the Lord. Because beneath the surface of our lives, our true desires are often confused and crowded.

Scripture

Psalms 27: 1-6

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked advance against me
    to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.

One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

Then my head will be exalted
    above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
    I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Discussion Questions

  • Icebreaker: If God could give you one thing right now no questions asked what would it be, and why?
  • What are some ways we often treat prayer like a customer service call instead of a relationship with God?
  • Read Psalm 27:4–6. Why do you think David asks for presence instead of provision? How does that challenge or inspire you?
  • Which of the three movements: dwell, gaze, or inquire do you need to lean into this week? What would it look like practically?
  • How has your desire for God changed (or been challenged) through this series? What’s one thing you can do this week to deepen that desire?

Moving Forward

Instead of just asking God to fix our lives, what if we asked God to form us through His presence? Like David, start your prayers this week with, “God, I want You more than anything else.” As you dwell, gaze, and inquire, you’ll find that the very Presence you’re seeking is already seeking you.
