Series: This Is How Faith Works
Born in Fire, Grown in Struggle
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.Tell Us Your Story

The Main Idea
Fire has a way of transforming what it touches melting, refining, and reshaping. Struggle does the same to our souls. The Apostle Paul’s life reminds us that calling often comes with conflict, and growth is rarely without pain. From his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus to his enduring ministry despite hardships, Paul shows us that God forges His servants through trials. We may be “born” in a moment of surrender, but we are “grown” in the furnace of life’s struggles. And it’s in that refining process that we discover the strength, faith, and purpose God placed within us.
Scriptures
Acts 9:3-6
3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
Acts 9:20
20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.
2 Corinthians 12: 9-10
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Timothy 4:7-9
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Discussion Questions
- Icebreaker: Can you share a moment in your life where a challenge or setback ended up shaping you for the better?
- Paul went from persecuting the church to preaching the gospel almost immediately (Acts 9:20). Why do you think God often uses our past experiences even painful ones—for His glory?
- Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. How have you experienced God’s strength in your weaknesses?
- Paul finished his race with faith (2 Timothy 4:7). What helps you keep going when your spiritual walk feels like a struggle?
Moving Forward
Just like Paul, you may have been “born” in a powerful moment of encounter with God, but your growth will come through the daily grind of faith, perseverance, and reliance on His strength. Let your struggles refine you, not define you. Trust that God’s fire is not to destroy you, but to shape you for His purpose.
