Main Idea

In this message, we learn that Jesus’ parables about the mustard seed and the yeast aren’t just nice illustrations but they’re revelations of how God’s Kingdom actually works. It starts small. It’s hidden. But it’s never powerless. It’s alive, working in unseen places, and growing into something unstoppable.

So the question is, can we trust that God is at work, even when we can’t see the results?

Scripture

Matthew 13: 31-35
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[b] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables,
I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

Matthew 2:23
23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

1 Corinthians 15:58
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Discussion Questions

  1. What’s something small or seemingly insignificant in your life that ended up making a big difference later on?
  2. Why do you think we’re often tempted to overlook small or hidden acts of faith? What does that say about our expectations of God?
  3. Read Matthew 13:31–33. How do these parables challenge your assumptions about how God moves or grows His Kingdom?
  4. Is there a “mustard seed” or “yeast” in your life right now, a prayer, a person, a small act that you need to keep trusting God with, even if it doesn’t seem fruitful yet?
  5. How can our group encourage each other to stay faithful in the small and unseen things this week?

Moving Forward

Don’t underestimate the power of your obedience, no matter how small or hidden it may seem. Plant seeds. Be faithful. Serve quietly. Pray when no one sees. Love when it costs you. The Kingdom is at work, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
