Main idea

This sermon reminds us of the real tragedy of Christmas…not that God is absent, but that He can be right next to us and we still miss Him.

Scripture

Luke 2: 1-7

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Discussion Questions

  • Ice Breaker: What’s the funniest or most ridiculous thing you’ve ever “lost” that was right in front of you the whole time?
  • Why do you think it’s so easy to go through the Christmas season and still miss Jesus?
  • Read Luke 2:6–7. Why do you think God chose to show up in such an ordinary, unnoticed way?
  • What are some “loud” things in your life right now that could be crowding out your awareness of Jesus?
  • What would it look like for you to make room in your heart, not just your calendar, for Jesus this season?

Moving Forward

This week, slow down and pray: “Jesus, help me to notice You.” He’s closer than you think. Not in a spotlight or a palace but in the ordinary, quiet places of your everyday life. Don’t miss Him.
