Series: When God Shows Up At Christmas
Closer Than You Think
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
Main Idea
Are you living in the middle? Or are you all in? Christmas isn’t just about lights, carols, and a baby in a manger. It’s about a bold claim: God came down to us. Not to give advice. Not to be a seasonal comfort. But to rescue us and offer real hope.
Scripture
Matthew 1: 18-25
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g] (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Discussion Questions
- Icebreaker: What’s one Christmas tradition that brings you joy every year and why does it matter to you?
- Why do you think so many people prefer a “middle ground” Jesus someone who inspires but doesn’t interfere?
- Read Matthew 1:21–23 and Hebrews 4:15–16. What does it change for you personally to know that Jesus is both fully God and fully human?
- What area of your life do you feel tempted to manage on your own, instead of inviting “God with you” into it?
- How would your life look different if you fully surrendered not just believed in Jesus, but trusted Him with everything?
Moving Forward
Don’t settle for living in the middle. “God with us” means Jesus is closer than you think: in your fear, your pain, your confusion. Step out of a casual Christianity and surrender fully to the One who understands you and holds your future. This week, invite Him into the exact area where you’ve felt most alone.
