The Road That Opens Eyes
Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I’ve fallen short. I’ve sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that You lived, died, and rose again so that I could be connected to God. I confess you as my Lord and personal Savior. I give you my past, present, and future. Take my life and use it. I give it to You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
The Main Idea
Have you ever realized how easy it is to shape Jesus into the image we want instead of seeing Him for who He truly is? We all do it through our upbringing, traditions, culture, and personal expectations. But the Resurrection life calls us to something deeper, something truer.
Just like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we can walk with Jesus and still not recognize Him. Disappointment, heartbreak, or unmet expectations can blind us to His presence. But even when we are moving away, Jesus pursues us.
This week, we’ll ask: How do we live as resurrected people, not just people who believe in a one-time event but people transformed daily by the living Christ?
Scriptures
Luke 24:13-18
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
Questions for Discussion
Icebreaker: Share a time when you realized something you believed for a long time wasn’t quite true—maybe something funny, or something serious. What changed your perspective?
- Have you ever caught yourself creating a version of Jesus that’s more comfortable for you? What did that look like?
- Read Luke 24:13–16. Why do you think the disciples didn’t recognize Jesus even though He was walking right beside them? What can prevent us from recognizing Jesus in our own lives?
- The disciples said, “We had hoped…” (Luke 24:21). Can you relate to that phrase? How can disappointment become a path that brings us closer to Jesus?
What if Jesus is closer to you than you think? What if the road you’re on, even if it feels like it’s going in the wrong direction, is exactly where He meets you? This week, reflect on the open-door image of God’s heart. He’s pursuing you, even in your doubt, even in your disappointment.
