Am I growing?

Main Idea

Jesus ended the most famous sermon in history with a warning, not a benediction. Two builders. Two houses. One storm. Both heard his words. Only one put them into practice. That’s the difference between a life that stands and a life that collapses, because spiritual growth was never about how much you know. It’s about whether you trust God enough to obey him.

Scripture

Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT)
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Romans 12:2
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is: his good, pleasing and perfect will.

James 1:22
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Discussion Questions

  • What does this passage say about God?
  • What does this passage say about people? Both houses were built and both faced the storm. What are you actually building your life on right now, and how do you know?
  • Do you tend to measure your spiritual growth by what you know (attendance, Bible knowledge, being around church) or by what you practice?
  • What is one area where God has been nudging you to do something, but you’ve been delaying? What is one thing you will do this week because of this passage?
