From the series:  On Mission and Empowered

You don’t need an umbrella

Sunday, April 30, 2023 by Andrew Ruiz – Acts 2:1-17

About the Series

When Jesus resurrected he instructed his followers two things: You have a mission and you have the power to complete it. 2000 years later that mission is still alive and his Holy Spirit enables us to be the hands and feet of Jesus

Main Idea

When we think of what Jesus wants us to do it may seem overwhelming but he gives us help. He promises to pour out his spirit over everyone – to empower us and to do his work.

Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

John 14:15-16

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

Acts 2:14-17

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

Discussion Questions

  • If you could speak another language fluently, which would it be and why? and What is the most unforgettable event you have ever been a part of? (does not have to be a spiritual one)
  • Read Acts 2:1-17 What stands out or think back to the sermon. Was there an idea or expression that spoke to you, or was there anything said that challenged or confused you?
  • Have you ever had an experience that can only be described as a prompting or leading of the Holy Spirit?
  • If the primary reason the Holy Spirit is given is so that Jesus’ followers can be his witnesses, does that change how you think about the Holy Spirit at all?
  • The Holy Spirit’s gift transformed the disciples from timid and fearful individuals into courageous and vocal witnesses. How does this highlight the Holy Spirit’s power? What does this mean for our circumstances and present situations?
  • Do you feel a sense of duty to share how Jesus has impacted your life with those who may not be familiar with Him, especially younger generations? What concerns or anxieties do you have regarding discussing your beliefs with others?
  • Can you identify a particular aspect of your life where you feel the Holy Spirit urging, compelling, or inspiring you to take action? How does this align with your responsibility to share the Gospel and bear witness to Christ?
  • What practical steps can you take this week to cultivate a relationship with someone who does not yet believe in Jesus, maybe a neighboor with the aim of gaining insight into their experiences and guiding them towards a deeper connection with God?

Verse to Memorize:

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:4

Idea Principal

Hechos 2:4
