The Mat and the Moment

John 5: 1-14

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. ² Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda^[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. ³ Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. ^[4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

⁷ “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

⁸ Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” ⁹ At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, ¹⁰ and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

¹¹ But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

¹² So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

¹³ The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

¹⁴ Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” ¹⁵ The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Questions for Discussion

1. In John 5, Jesus asks the invalid, “Do you want to get well?” What might this question mean for us today in terms of taking responsibility for our own healing and growth?
2. How do you relate to the feeling of being “stuck” in your life, whether spiritually, emotionally, or mentally? What are some modern-day “mats” we need to pick up and leave behind?
3. Jesus tells the man to “pick up your mat and walk.” Why do you think Jesus made him carry his mat after healing him? What does it symbolize for us in our journey with God?
4. We often depend on others or external circumstances for change. What are some areas in your life where you need to stop waiting for someone else and take ownership of your walk with God?
5. Jesus sought out the man at the pool, just like He seeks us out. How does this aspect of God’s character—His pursuit of us—change how you view your relationship with Him?

Juan 5: 1-14

• Después de estas cosas, había una fiesta de los judíos, y subió Jesús a Jerusalén.
• Y hay en Jerusalén, cerca de la puerta de las ovejas, un estanque, llamado en hebreo Bethesda, el cual tiene cinco pórticos.
• En estos yacía una multitud de enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos, que esperaban el movimiento del agua.
• Porque un ángel descendía de tiempo en tiempo al estanque y movía el agua; y el que primero descendía al estanque, después del movimiento del agua, quedaba sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviese.
• Y había allí un hombre que había estado enfermo treinta y ocho años.
• Cuando Jesús lo vio acostado y supo que llevaba ya mucho tiempo así, le dijo: ¿Quieres ser sano?
• El enfermo le respondió: Señor, no tengo hombre que me Meta en el estanque cuando se agita el agua; y entre tanto que yo voy, otro desciende antes que yo.
• Jesús le dijo: Levántate, toma tu lecho y anda.
• Y al instante aquel hombre fue sanado, y tomó su lecho y anduvo; y era día de reposo aquel día.
• Entonces los judíos dijeron a aquel que había sido sanado: Es día de reposo; no te es lícito llevar tu lecho.
• Él les respondió: El que me sanó, él mismo me dijo: Toma tu lecho y anda.
• Le preguntaron entonces: ¿Quién es el que te dijo: Toma tu lecho y anda?
• Y el que había sido sanado no sabía quién era; porque Jesús se había apartado de la multitud que estaba en aquel lugar.
• Después le halló Jesús en el templo, y le dijo: Mira, has sido sanado; no peques más, para que no te venga alguna cosa peor.
