From the series:  On Mission and Empowered

Light a Fire

Sunday, May 21, 2023 by Andrew Ruiz – Acts 2:42-47

About the Series

When Jesus resurrected he instructed his followers two things: You have a mission and you have the power to complete it. 2000 years later that mission is still alive and his Holy Spirit enables us to be the hands and feet of Jesus

Main Idea

The church is not meant to be a passive cruise ship where some do all the work while others critique, but rather a united battleship on a mission where everyone is expected to play an active role and work together in devotion, fellowship, teaching, and prayer. The early church exemplified this unity and devotion, and as followers of Jesus, we are called to be actively engaged in community and serving one another. The church is to be a fire!

Genesis 2:18

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

Psalms 133:1

Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when brothers dwell in unity!

Matthew 22:36-39

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Acts 2:38-47

38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe[a] came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

John 17:21

21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Verse to Memorize:

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Acts 2:42

Idea Principal

Hechos 2:42
