From the series:  On Mission and Empowered

Don’t Look Up

Sunday, April 16, 2023 by Andrew Ruiz – Acts 1:1-11

About the Series

When Jesus resurrected he instructed his followers two things: You have a mission and you have the power to complete it. 2000 years later that mission is still alive and his Holy Spirit enables us to be the hands and feet of Jesus

Lesson Plan

  • Español

Main Idea

Jesus empowers his followers with the Holy Spirit to go on a mission and be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. When we become followers of Jesus we have a new identity, a new belonging and a new mission.

Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying[a] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

1 Samuel 17:58

58 And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

Matthew 1:1

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Jeremiah 1:1

The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,

Romans 1:7

To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:1

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful[a] in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 1:2

“To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae…”

Philippians 1:1

“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi”

Ephesians 2:19

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,[a] but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever experienced a situation in your life where you felt completely powerless or overwhelmed? If so, what was the situation and how did you react?
  • Think back to the sermon. Was there an idea or expression that spoke to you, or was there anything said that challenged or confused you?
  • Read Acts 1:1-11 – ask the group what stands out to them
  • What is told to us about Jesus’ purpose and identity, as well as the purpose and identity of the Holy Spirit, in this passage?
  • Judging from the disciples question in Acts 1:6 what was of more importance to them – God’s kingdom or their position in it?
  • The Jews hated the Samaritans, but God included them in His instructions. Who is your enemy, or the person you dislike, or the person you have been avoiding ? How are you witnessing to them?
  • In what ways can we motivate and support each other in our Life Group to follow Jesus promptly rather than “looking at the sky” or being inactive?
  • Write down the names or initials of individuals with whom you could invite to our life group / church. Pray for guidance from God to find opportunities to speak with each person on the list, and start taking action on what He shows you.

Verse to Memorize:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

Idea Principal

Hechos 1:1-11
Reina-Valera 1960

Hechos 1:8
