Main Idea

Discovering why Jesus is the light of the world will help you overcome the darkness in your life.

John 8: 12-20

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[a] who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

John 8:28

28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.

Matthew 5: 14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Discussion Questions

  • Read John 8:12-20, what caught your attention?
  • The Bible consistently presents the theme of light. How do you see this theme play out in the following scriptures:
    • Psalm 27
    • Genesis 1:1-5
    • Leviticus 23:39-43
    • Isaiah 9:1-7
    • John 1:1-5
    • Revelation 21:22-27
  • One thing light does is that it exposes what has been hidden in darkness, including what is in our hearts. Why are we so tempted to remain in darkness rather than letting Christ’s light expose and transform us?
  • During the Jewish feast of tabernacles, Jesus proclaimed himself as the light of the world. What was the significance of this timing, and how does the context enrich Jesus’ statement about himself?
  • Jesus invites us to embrace the light and to walk in it. How does Jesus facilitate this for us, and what empowers us to continue following him? What hinders us from recognizing the value of following Jesus for our spiritual well-being?
  • Are we truly convinced that a life journeying with Jesus brings greater beauty? How can we respond to the Holy Spirit’s guidance as he leads us towards the light?
  • In what way can we share Christ’s light with someone who needs it this week?

Verse to Memorize:

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.1

Idea Principal

Lee Juan 8:12-20. ¿Qué te llama la atención?
