The Main Idea

What if the greatest gift you could give this Christmas isn’t wrapped under the tree—but wrapped in your heart? This week, we dive into how Mary’s ‘yes’ to God teaches us to overcome fear, doubt, and busyness to make room for Jesus in our lives.

Luke 1:26-38

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

What does Christmas mean to you personally? How has your understanding of its significance changed over time?

Exploring the Text

• Read Luke 1:26-38. How do you think Mary felt when she heard the angel’s message? How would you have responded if you were in her place?
• Fear, doubt, and busyness are common barriers to letting God into our lives. Which of these do you relate to the most, and why?
• In verse 38, Mary says, “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.” What does this statement teach us about surrendering our plans to God?

Connecting with Our Lives

• Like Mary, we all have plans for our lives. Share a time when God interrupted your plans. How did you respond? Looking back, how did that experience shape your faith?
• Compare and contrast Mary and Eve as mentioned in the sermon. How does Mary’s trust in God challenge or inspire you in your own relationship with Him?
• Christmas is described as God pursuing us in love. What does God’s pursuit of you personally mean for how you approach your relationship with Him?

Application and Reflection

• What is one specific area of your life where God might be calling you to trust Him more or surrender control? How can this group support you in taking that step?

26 Al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,
27 a una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José, de la casa de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María.
28 Y entrando el ángel en donde ella estaba, dijo: ¡Salve, muy favorecida! El Señor es contigo; bendita tú entre las mujeres.

30 Entonces el ángel le dijo: María, no temas, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios.

32 Este será grande, y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David su padre;
33 y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre, y su reino no tendrá fin.

36 Y he aquí tu parienta Elisabet, ella también ha concebido hijo en su vejez; y este es el sexto mes para ella, la que llamaban estéril;
37 porque nada hay imposible para Dios.
38 Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de su presencia.
